What happened
Robert Lawrence White, 41, was shot and killed by Montgomery County, Maryland police Officer Anand Badgujar in a Silver Spring townhouse-community parking area on June 11, 2018. Badgujar had finished an unrelated call when he tried to question White, who was walking on Three Oaks Drive. White was unarmed. Released body-camera recordings showed an initially verbal interaction that turned into a physical confrontation. Police said White repeatedly charged the officer, ignored pepper spray and punched him after he fell. Badgujar fired more than once during the struggle, killing White. Residents and advocates questioned why the officer initiated the encounter and whether he used adequate de-escalation tactics. Howard County State's Attorney Dario Broccolino reviewed the footage and witness accounts and declined criminal charges in July 2018. A Montgomery County Police Department administrative review, released in April 2019, also concluded the shooting was justified under department policy. Both were official reviews, not court verdicts.
