ICE Brutality & Accountability

Deaths, injuries and mistreatment in immigration detention and enforcement, and the investigations into what happened.

Detention & enforcement

People in immigration custody depend on public agencies and, in many facilities, private contractors for their health and safety. These records follow deaths, nonfatal injuries, abuse and mistreatment, identifying the people affected, the facilities and the evidence about what happened.

The detention-death material includes mortality research reproduced by Human Rights Watch, with reported medical accounts and the facilities involved. Individual records explain the reported cause and investigative findings, including questions that remain unresolved.

ICE, CBP and local agencies have different roles. Each entry identifies the agency supported by its sources and records whether the outcome was fatal, nonfatal or unknown.
