What happened

Ricky Jerome Boyd, 20, was fatally shot outside his grandmother's home in Savannah, Georgia, on January 23, 2018, as U.S. Marshals and local officers attempted to serve a warrant accusing him of involvement in an earlier homicide. Boyd came out of the home holding what officers initially believed to be a handgun; investigators later determined it was a CO2-powered BB pistol. Police said he raised the air gun toward officers despite commands to put it down, and several officers fired. A Savannah police sergeant was also struck by gunfire during the encounter. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted an outside inquiry. In May 2018, a Chatham County grand jury declined to indict the officers, and the police department publicly released body-camera footage. Boyd's relatives and advocates questioned the shooting, while the official review cited witness accounts concerning his handling of the air gun. The homicide arrest warrant was an allegation, not a criminal conviction.
