What happened

Jonathan Bennett, 23, was fatally shot by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police outside their headquarters in uptown Charlotte on January 11, 2018, hours after police accused him of killing his girlfriend Brittany White, 24, the mother of their infant daughter. Officers were conducting a briefing near a department parking deck when, according to police and the department's released radio communications, Bennett drove into the area and opened fire. Officer Casey Shue was struck in the leg. Officers Jeffrey Zederbaum and Jared Decker returned fire, wounding Bennett, who died at Carolinas Medical Center. Other officers were present but did not fire. His infant daughter was found unharmed after the earlier homicide investigation. Investigators collected evidence from the headquarters parking lot and released dispatch and radio recordings. The allegations concerning White's death were never adjudicated in criminal court because Bennett died; the account of his final encounter is grounded in the officers' reports and department communications.
