What happened
Jean Pedro Pierre, 42, was killed by Broward County sheriff's deputies at a Lauderdale Lakes apartment complex on December 6, 2017, after deputies responded to a disturbance. Released body-camera and surveillance video showed a deputy confronting Pierre inside an apartment and telling him to step back. The interaction moved into a courtyard as Pierre followed the deputy; an attempted Taser deployment did not stop him. Police said Pierre became aggressive and deputies fired during the struggle. The recordings are an important source for the sequence, rather than simply relying on the department's initial characterization. The fatal encounter followed a call for assistance at a residential complex, not a criminal trial or conviction. The Broward Sheriff's Office investigated the deputy-involved shooting. Contemporary coverage identified disputes about the escalation and whether less-lethal methods were effective; it did not establish a final judicial finding on the use of force.
