What happened
Kiwi Herring, 30, a Black transgender woman, spouse and mother of three, was shot and killed by St. Louis police in August 2017 after officers responded to a dispute involving neighbors. Police alleged that Herring had stabbed a neighbor and then confronted responding officers with a knife. Her partner and supporters disputed the official description and said the couple had faced persistent transphobic harassment from neighbors. Herring was shot multiple times near her home while family members were nearby. Local LGBTQ advocates held memorial gatherings and demanded accountability, emphasizing concerns about how police respond to transgender people and domestic disputes. Herring's name and identity were repeatedly misrepresented in initial official accounts. Later public remembrance documented her role as a parent and community member, not simply as the subject of a police incident. The allegation that she threatened officers is the police version of the encounter; the source does not establish a final judicial finding.
