What happened
Kareem Ali Nadir Jones, 30, was shot and killed by Columbus, Ohio police on July 7, 2017, after officers encountered him in the Franklinton neighborhood. Police said they were checking a complaint involving children throwing rocks at a woman's car and saw Jones walking behind homes on Schultz Avenue. Jones had reportedly been looking for the children after the woman told family members about the incident. Officers approached him near a backyard, and the encounter quickly escalated. Police released body-camera footage that appeared to show Jones reaching toward his waistband immediately before two officers opened fire. The footage was the first recording of an officer-involved shooting publicly released from Columbus officers' body cameras. His family and community members sought answers about the police response to what began as a neighborhood complaint. A visible hand movement and the officers' interpretation of it are distinct from a court finding that deadly force was necessary.
