What happened
DeJuan Markeis Guillory, 27, a father of three, was shot and killed by Evangeline Parish sheriff's Deputy Holden LaFleur near Mamou, Louisiana, before dawn on July 6, 2017. Guillory and his girlfriend, DeQuince Brown, were riding an all-terrain vehicle on rural roads during a trip to hunt frogs when the deputy stopped them. LaFleur said Guillory punched him and that Brown climbed on his back and reached for his gun. Brown disputed the deputy's version and gave a substantially different description of the physical struggle and shooting. LaFleur fired the fatal shots, and Brown was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder of an officer. Louisiana State Police investigated the death, including the conflicting statements of the only two surviving firsthand witnesses. The allegations against Brown were criminal charges, not proof of guilt; the disagreement between the deputy and the surviving passenger is central to understanding the shooting. Guillory's obituary documents his children and family ties.
