What happened
Jimmie Montel Sanders, 33, was shot and killed by Appleton, Wisconsin police Lieutenant Jay Steinke during a disturbance at Jack's Apple Pub early on May 21, 2017. Police arrived at the downtown bar around 1:40 a.m. amid a chaotic confrontation involving multiple people. Chief Todd Thomas identified Steinke, a 28-year department veteran, as the officer who fired and Sanders as the man killed. Two other men at the pub were hospitalized, one with a gunshot injury to an arm and another with an unrelated shoulder injury. Sanders was transported to a hospital, where he died. Authorities collected bar security footage and police body-camera video to reconstruct the seconds leading up to the shooting. Sanders had recently been staying with friends in Appleton and maintained ties to Milwaukee. The chief's initial description of a rapidly evolving and chaotic scene was a preliminary police account; the case-specific reporting documented an investigation but did not establish a later court judgment.
