What happened
Landon Nobles, 24, was shot and killed by Austin police Sergeant Richard Egal and Corporal Maxwell Johnson near Sixth Street early on May 7, 2017. Officers responded after witnesses reported a man firing a gun near bars downtown. Nobles ran from officers; Egal intercepted him using a police bicycle and Nobles stumbled. Officers said he then turned with a firearm, prompting them to shoot him several times. His relatives sued the city, alleging Nobles had no weapon in his hands when he was shot and citing civilian witnesses who disputed the police account. Travis County prosecutors determined in 2018 that the officers' actions were justified and declined to present the matter for charges. In a later federal civil trial, however, jurors found a constitutional violation, rejected the officers' qualified-immunity defense and awarded Nobles's family substantial damages. The initial prosecutorial decision and later civil finding used different legal standards and must not be conflated.
