What happened

Terrence Thomas Jr., 19, was fatally shot by Prince George's County Officer Steven Tucker on December 22, 2016, in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Officers responded to a suspicious vehicle in the 4100 block of Byers Street and found Thomas and passenger Alvin Young Jr. asleep inside. Police said the passenger attempted to flee when officers woke them and Thomas pulled a handgun and pointed it toward Young and an officer near the passenger door. Tucker fired twice, striking Thomas in the chest; officers performed emergency aid, but he died at the hospital. Young was arrested on separate firearm charges. The alleged gun threat is the department's account, while Young's charges do not determine Thomas's actions.
