What happened
Samson Fleurant, 25, was killed by Port St. Lucie police on November 18, 2016, after relatives called for help during a disturbance at the family's home on Southwest Colleen Avenue. Police said Fleurant was using a machete to damage objects inside the house and refused commands to put it down. Officer Kenneth Frid deployed a Taser, but officers said Fleurant continued moving toward them, and K-9 Officer Colin Duncombe fired his handgun. His father Ylovy, whose family emigrated from Haiti, disputed whether deadly force was necessary and urged police to use other options. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement reviewed the shooting; later reporting says a grand jury deemed the officers' actions justified. The family's objections remain distinct from that legal conclusion.
