What happened

Ferguson Laurent Jr., 22, was fatally shot by Salisbury, North Carolina, Officer Karl Boehm on November 3, 2016, during a no-knock search warrant at a home on East Lafayette Street. Officers were investigating alleged narcotics and robbery activity. The State Bureau of Investigation said Laurent fired at officers as the entry team approached, and Boehm returned fire, striking him ten times. Laurent died despite medical intervention. The officers were not wearing body cameras. Rowan County District Attorney Brandy Cook reviewed the SBI investigation and announced in June 2017 that Boehm would not be charged, finding the shooting lawful. The no-knock entry, absence of body-camera footage and prosecution decision are separate important circumstances.
