What happened

Jason Bradley King, 38, was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers Hector Arroyo and Stephen Rice near Date Avenue and Tyler Street in Sacramento County on October 28, 2016. An officer first contacted King over crossing outside a crosswalk, and said King revealed an object that appeared to be a handgun. Officers followed and ordered King to show his hands, then fired after reporting he raised the object toward them. King died at a hospital; no officers were hurt. Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert reviewed the scene, witness accounts and video and concluded in December 2017 that the shooting was legally justified. The encounter originated as an everyday pedestrian contact, a central fact in evaluating escalation.
