What happened

Thad Demarco Hale, 33, was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer on October 27, 2016, during a reported hostage situation at the Whispering Heights apartments on Rainbow Drive near Terrell Hills. Police Chief William McManus said a woman in her early twenties had been held against her will for several days and managed to call her mother, who summoned police. Officers forced entry after hearing the woman scream inside the apartment. According to police, Hale raised a rifle toward the officers as they entered and an officer fired twice, wounding him fatally. The woman was treated for head injuries that police suspected had resulted from an assault. The Bexar County Medical Examiner listed Hale's death as a homicide, a medical classification that does not itself determine whether the shooting was criminal. The seven-year department veteran who fired was assigned to administrative duty pending investigation. These details reflect contemporaneous police statements; the cited reporting did not identify a final criminal review.
