What happened

Carnell Snell Jr., 18, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on October 1, 2016, after fleeing a vehicle officers suspected might be stolen. Police pursued Snell into a residential yard and claimed he held and then pointed a handgun. Relatives and neighbors challenged the account, saying he was running away when officers shot him. The coroner confirmed Snell's death, and protests followed in South Los Angeles. The district attorney later reviewed physical evidence, video and the officers' perceptions. The initiating suspicion concerned the vehicle's temporary paper plates; it did not itself establish that Snell had committed a crime. The officer account and family's eyewitness assertions must remain attributed, not conflated.
