What happened

Najier Salaam, 18, was fatally shot alongside George Richards-Meyers during an encounter with Newark police on September 30, 2016. Officers responding to reports of robberies followed a red minivan; gunfire erupted near North Seventh Street and Abington Avenue. Six Newark officers participated in the shooting, and prosecutors opened a formal investigation. Authorities identified a third man arrested at the scene, but allegations about the robberies and specific threats posed by Salaam were not tried after his death. Both young men died during the same operation; Salaam's individual record should preserve that context while distinguishing police suspicions and any independently determined facts.
