What happened
George Richards-Meyers, 18, was shot and killed by Newark police on September 30, 2016, in a confrontation near North Seventh Street and Abington Avenue. Officers said they were pursuing a red minivan associated with reports of street robberies and had encountered three young men. Six officers discharged firearms, killing Richards-Meyers and Najier Salaam, also 18; a third man was detained. A woman who reported being robbed and struck with a pistol helped officers trace the vehicle, according to initial police accounts. Essex County prosecutors opened an investigation, and the officers were placed on administrative duty. The robbery allegations were not criminal convictions of either deceased teenager. Their deaths occurred in the same police operation but are separate records.
