What happened

Dahir Ahmed Adan, 20, was shot and killed by off-duty Avon Officer Jason Falconer at Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on September 17, 2016. Security video and investigators reported that Adan entered wearing a security uniform and attacked shoppers with knives, injuring ten people. Falconer, who was shopping, confronted Adan inside Macy's and fired when Adan advanced toward him with a knife, ending the attack. Authorities investigated possible ideological motives, but did not establish an organizational link based solely on extremist claims of responsibility. The Stearns County Attorney concluded in October 2016 that Falconer's use of force was legally justified. The injuries to the shoppers and documented knife attack are indispensable context.
