What happened

Tyre King, 13, was shot and killed by Columbus Officer Bryan Mason on September 14, 2016, during a response to an armed-robbery report. King ran from officers, and Mason said he reached toward his waistband with what appeared to be a handgun. The recovered object was a BB pistol designed to resemble a real firearm. The family's lawyers and witnesses questioned whether King posed an immediate threat. A Franklin County grand jury declined criminal charges. In 2022, a federal jury rejected the family's civil-rights lawsuit against the officer. Those criminal and civil outcomes do not change King's age or the fact that the weapon was a replica; the family's allegations and officer testimony must remain separately attributed.
