What happened

Jaqwan Julius Terry, 24, was killed by Raleigh police on August 29, 2016, following a complaint that he displayed a handgun and threatened a former partner. Officers B.F. Burleson and B.S. Beausoleil chased him on foot. Wake County investigators said he struggled with Burleson, picked up a dropped gun and exchanged shots, wounding Burleson in the leg. Beausoleil also fired and Terry died. District Attorney Lorrin Freeman reviewed the evidence and determined in April 2017 that officers acted in lawful self-defense. That prosecutor finding documents the charging decision; the officers' actions and the reported domestic threat are attributed to the investigation.
