What happened

Jeff Cornell Tyson, 32, was killed by Indianapolis police on July 25, 2016, after a vehicle stop and chase turned into a gunfight. Officer Joseph Nunez linked Tyson's Oldsmobile to a reported vehicle theft and attempted a stop while Tyson was driving with his wife Dominique. Tyson fled and shots fired during the ensuing pursuit wounded Nunez and struck police cars; Tyson was killed in the exchange. His widow sued, disputing the stop and the force officers used. A March 2020 federal court opinion found reasonable suspicion to stop the car and substantial evidence that Tyson had fired at police. That court review and the family's allegations are distinct parts of the record.
