What happened
Gavin Eugene Long, 29, was killed by a Baton Rouge police tactical officer on July 17, 2016, after launching an armed ambush of law-enforcement personnel. Investigators said Long, wearing body armor and carrying rifles and a handgun, targeted officers responding to reports of a man with a gun. He shot six officers, killing Baton Rouge police officers Matthew Gerald and Montrell Jackson and East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy Brad Garafola. Three other officers were wounded. Long continued firing as officers pursued him until a SWAT member shot him, ending the attack. The dead and wounded officers and the documented deliberate gunfire are indispensable context for his inclusion in fatal police-shooting data; the dataset is not limited to cases of alleged misconduct.
