What happened

Orville Edwards, 39, was shot and killed by New York City police in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, on July 11, 2016, during officers' response to a reported home invasion on 78th Street. Police alleged that two armed men disguised as construction workers entered a house, restrained residents including a baby, and searched the property for valuables. Investigators said Edwards escaped through a window or fire escape after dislodging an air conditioner, but encountered responding officers outside. According to the NYPD account reported by WABC, Edwards pointed a gun toward officers, who opened fire and killed him at the scene. Police searched for a second man believed to have escaped, while detectives canvassed for video and interviewed witnesses. The home-invasion allegations and Edwards's alleged act of pointing a gun were the authorities' accounts, not findings from an adversarial court proceeding. Contemporary reporting does not identify a final review disposition for the shooting.
