What happened

Alva Burnett Braziel, 38, was shot and killed by Houston officers L. Lopez and E. Macias at Cullen Boulevard and Ward Street overnight on July 9–10, 2016. The department said Braziel stood in the roadway carrying a pistol and pointed it toward their approaching patrol vehicle. Officers took cover behind open vehicle doors and repeatedly ordered him to lower the gun. They fired when, according to the officers, he again pointed it at them. The Houston Police Department identified the involved officers and opened parallel homicide and internal investigations, while the Harris County district attorney examined the shooting. The exact timing varies between dataset entries and the department's report; the police description of the threat is not itself an independent courtroom finding.
