What happened
Andre Johnson, 40, was killed by police in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, on July 9, 2016, after a pursuit that began with an investigation into two homicides in neighboring Arkansas. Sevier County deputies had responded to a disturbance in Horatio and later found 66-year-old Deborah A. Johnson and 70-year-old Don L. Brown shot to death near a residence. Authorities identified Johnson as the suspect in those deaths and pursued him into Oklahoma. Police released dashboard-camera footage showing the chase through Broken Bow. Broken Bow Officer Todd Gilbert later described an exchange of gunfire after the pursuit ended. Investigators reported that Johnson fired first, officers returned fire, and Johnson subsequently died at McCurtain County Memorial Hospital in Idabel. The number of shots was not initially disclosed, and no officer was reported injured. Involved officers were placed on administrative leave and returned to work shortly afterward, according to contemporary reporting. The homicide accusations were police allegations, not criminal convictions.
