What happened
Lafayette Evans, 37, was shot and killed by Fort Madison police on June 29, 2016, following a robbery of Fort Madison Bank and Trust in Iowa. State investigators said Evans fired two rounds into the bank ceiling, threatened employees and fled carrying more than $224,000. Officers confronted him outside; they said he fired several shots at a Lee County deputy's patrol car. Fort Madison officers fired back, striking Evans once in the chest and killing him. Iowa's Attorney General reviewed the shooting and determined in July 2016 that the officers acted legally to protect Deputy Scott Sproul, who was under fire. The armed bank robbery and independent charging review are central context rather than circumstances to omit from an archive of police shootings.
