What happened
Sherman Evans Sr., 63, was fatally shot by Washington, D.C., police outside an apartment building on Varnum Street NE on June 27, 2016. Federal investigators determined that Evans had called 911 himself, reporting a person displaying a firearm. Officers arrived and encountered him holding a realistic .177-caliber BB pistol. Body-camera footage showed officers ordering him to put it down for several minutes, during which he sometimes raised its barrel toward them. Officers eventually fired, and Evans died at a hospital. In March 2017, federal prosecutors declined criminal charges after reviewing video, witnesses, dispatch recordings, autopsy findings and physical evidence. The unusual initiating call, replica weapon and lengthy standoff are essential to the official case record.
