What happened
Lincoln police shot and killed Germichael Kennedy, 22, on June 26, 2016, hours after two women were shot in the city. Police identified 20-year-old Marlene Rashidi as having died and 23-year-old Dezarae Mann as wounded in that earlier attack, and reported that witnesses identified Kennedy as the shooter. Officers subsequently located Kennedy near Portia and Knox Streets. According to the Lincoln Police Department, Kennedy raised a firearm toward officers during the encounter. Sergeant Mario Robinson and Officer Josh Atkinson then fired their service weapons, killing him. The officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and police investigators examined the shooting. The account of Kennedy raising the weapon is the police description of the confrontation; the reported earlier shootings were being investigated separately from whether officers' use of deadly force was justified.
