What happened
Donte L. Johnson, 30, was killed by Dolton police officers Philip Sheehan and Ryan Perez outside a Shell gas station on East Sibley Boulevard on June 26, 2016. Responding to a reported armed robbery, officers encountered Johnson with a handgun near customer Ayrius Duncan, who had been struck with the gun. Prosecutors later said Johnson pointed the weapon toward Sheehan, who fired; the investigation also documented that officers fired additional shots as Johnson turned and fled. He suffered gunshot wounds to the head, chest and arm. The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force reviewed surveillance, forensic evidence and witness accounts. Johnson's mother, Saqueena Easterwood, sued the officers and village in 2017, alleging excessive force and disputing that he posed a threat while fleeing. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office ultimately declined criminal charges against the officers, concluding the evidence did not support prosecution. The no-charge decision and the family's civil allegations are distinct findings.
