What happened

Osee Calix, 33, was shot by Tucson Officer Ian Brown after a bicycle stop on May 30, 2016. Police said Calix struck a raised edge of sidewalk and fell; paramedics checked him and determined he did not need hospital care. Officers then sought to detain him after he allegedly provided false identifying information. Police said Calix produced a handgun during the resulting struggle, and Brown fired. Calix died from the gunshot wounds. The Tucson Police Department publicly identified Brown, a relatively new officer, and opened an investigation. The escalation from a bicycle infraction and minor fall to a fatal encounter, and the claimed firearm, are central to the case. The contemporary reports did not establish a subsequent criminal finding.
