What happened
Dennis Hudson, 50, was killed by a Lincoln police officer outside the Discount Food Mart on Highway 78 in Eastaboga, Alabama, on May 28, 2016. Authorities said the department was responding to a domestic-violence complaint involving a man with a gun. Witnesses reported officers repeatedly ordered Hudson to put down his weapon before the shooting. Local reporters questioned the unusual delay of more than two weeks before officials publicly identified him. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated and submitted its findings to Talladega County prosecutors. In January 2017, authorities reported a grand jury had declined to indict the officer. The officer's identity and many details were still withheld from the public in that report.
