What happened

Vernell Charles Bing Jr., 22, was fatally shot by Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer Tyler Landreville after a car chase and collision at Ninth and Liberty Streets on May 22, 2016. Officers were pursuing a Camaro reported stolen and linked to another shooting; police said Bing crashed into Landreville's cruiser. Bing exited unarmed. Landreville fired five shots and struck him once in the head. Witnesses and family attorneys disputed the claim that Bing posed an immediate threat, saying he was moving away when shot. The family's federal lawsuit challenged the gunfire and pursuit tactics. In September 2017, Florida prosecutors ruled Landreville's shooting justified. That charging decision did not resolve the family's contrary eyewitness allegations.
