What happened

Michael Eugene Wilson Jr. was killed by Hallandale Beach police in Florida on May 22, 2016, after officers responded to reports of vehicle break-ins near a residential waterfront complex. Police said officers located multiple suspects and pursued them through the neighborhood, including near a canal, where the fatal shooting occurred. Contemporary Miami Herald reporting described shattered car windows and an extensive police response, but said at the time that it was unclear whether the suspects had weapons. Those initial police suspicions about vehicle theft should not be confused with an adjudicated finding against Wilson. The reviewed reporting does not establish a completed prosecutor's decision on the officer's use of force.
