What happened

Charlin Charles, 25, was shot and killed by two Orlando police officers on May 1, 2016, on Orange Blossom Trail near Carter Street. Officers responded to calls about a man walking with what witnesses thought was a chrome handgun. Police said Charles ignored commands to drop the object and raised it toward them, prompting officers to fire. The object was later identified as a simulated firearm, not a working gun. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement opened an investigation. The department identified four responding officers but did not clarify in the first release which two fired, and none had a body camera. The fact that the gun was a replica and that no body-camera recording existed is important to evaluating the police-reported threat.
