Joshua Brooks, 26, was shot and killed by Chesapeake, Virginia, police on April 26, 2016, when two officers arrived at his home to take him for a mental-health evaluation. A female relative answered the door. Police said Brooks entered through the back of the house and fired, then moved around front and shot the woman as she ran away. The officers reported that Brooks also shot toward them; they returned fire, and he died at the hospital. The woman survived after treatment. The incident began as a response to a mental-health concern, an important circumstance alongside the police-reported gunfire.
