What happened

Rico Don Rae Johnson, 28, was shot by Greenbelt, Maryland, police after reports of gunfire from a third-floor apartment balcony on Springhill Court on April 18, 2016. Police said Johnson had been discharging a gun for an extended period, sometimes at random, and fired toward arriving officers. A Greenbelt officer returned fire; a Prince George's County tactical team later entered the apartment and detained Johnson. He died at a hospital. The community's Greenbelt News Review published the detailed police blotter and noted that no other residents or officers were injured. The department's account of the balcony shooting and return fire should be attributed, while an independent later criminal or civil finding was not established in the reviewed reporting.
