What happened

Demetrius Dorsey, 18, was fatally shot by a Cobb County SWAT officer during an April 17–18, 2016, standoff at a Marathon convenience store on Mableton Parkway in Georgia. Police responded to an armed-robbery alarm and reported that Dorsey barricaded himself inside, taking two employees hostage. SWAT officers and crisis negotiators arrived; an officer shot Dorsey after midnight. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died. The two employees escaped without injury, and investigators recovered a handgun they said belonged to Dorsey. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation opened an independent inquiry for referral to the Cobb County district attorney. The initial GBI release establishes the reported hostage situation and fatal gunfire but does not itself provide a final charging decision.
