What happened

Pierre Loury, 16, was shot and killed by Chicago Officer Sean Hitz in North Lawndale on April 11, 2016, after police pursued a vehicle in connection with reported gunfire. Loury climbed a rear fence while officers pursued him. Prosecutors said he turned and pointed a handgun at Hitz, who fired the fatal shot; relatives and witnesses questioned the account, prompting protests. The Independent Police Review Authority, its successor COPA, and the FBI investigated. A detailed Cook County State's Attorney decision memorandum reviewed witness statements, video, forensic evidence and dispatch records, finding insufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Hitz. That is the prosecutor's documented decision, while disputes about the pursuit and use of force remain part of the public case history.
