What happened

India M. Beaty, 25, was shot and killed by two plainclothes Norfolk police officers in Virginia on March 19, 2016, near a convenience store. Officers assigned to a vice and narcotics investigation said they observed a group fighting and approached. According to the department, Beaty displayed what appeared to be a handgun, and officers fired. Police subsequently identified the object as a non-firing replica firearm. The officers were placed on administrative duty pending investigation, and the department released a photograph of the replica. Beaty's family and advocates questioned the lethal response, particularly because she had no functioning firearm. The police description of her movements is an official account, not a criminal court finding.
