What happened
Arteair Ray Porter Jr., 22, was killed by officers near Lemmon Drive and U.S. Route 395 in Reno, Nevada, on March 10, 2016, during a prolonged response to his own 911 calls. Porter said he was suicidal, claimed to have a rifle and threatened to shoot passing drivers. Officers used vehicles and negotiators to keep their distance. Porter’s family described a history of schizophrenia and prior psychiatric hospitalizations. Seven officers fired when they said he raised the weapon in a shooting stance. Investigators later established the long gun was a Daisy BB gun rather than a functioning firearm. In December 2016, the Washoe County district attorney concluded that the officers' use of force was legally justified. The crisis call, replica gun and attempted negotiations are essential to an accurate account.
