What happened

Gregory “Greg” Gunn, 58, was shot and killed by Montgomery police Officer Aaron Cody Smith on February 25, 2016, after Smith stopped him while he was walking home in his neighborhood. Gunn, who was unarmed when he died, fled a confrontation involving a Taser and police gunfire. His family questioned why he had been stopped at all, and the shooting prompted protests and a prosecution of Smith. A jury convicted Smith of manslaughter in November 2019, rejecting his self-defense argument; he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in January 2020. The conviction and sentence are established criminal outcomes, rather than simply accusations by Gunn's family. The case is an important example of an officer being convicted for unjustified deadly force.
