What happened

Kisha Michael, 31, was fatally shot by Inglewood, California, officers early on February 21, 2016, while sitting inside a parked Chevrolet Malibu alongside Marquintan Sandlin. Police said they approached after a report that someone in the vehicle had a gun. Five officers discharged their weapons into the car, killing both occupants; neither had fired at police. The Los Angeles County district attorney reviewed the case years later and reported gaps in the original investigation, including the absence of body-camera and dashcam recordings. A March 31, 2022, decision said there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers' deadly force was unlawful. Michael's death must be treated separately from assumptions about Sandlin's actions and from the criminal prosecution threshold.
