What happened
Marcos Perea, 41, was shot and killed by officers in Pierce County, Washington, on February 20, 2016, after an armed pursuit. Investigators concluded that Perea shot and killed his estranged girlfriend Jessica Ortega, 27, at the University Place Care Center where she worked; she had sought a protection order that day. Authorities said Perea fled in a Honda, fired at pursuing patrol vehicles on Interstate 5 and continued shooting after officers stopped his car. Officers fired when he allegedly raised his handgun rather than surrendering. Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist reviewed multiple investigations and concluded the shooting was legally justified. Ortega's death and protective-order history are essential context and should not be omitted from the fatal-police-shooting entry.
