What happened
Dyzhawn L. Perkins, 19, was unarmed when Buckingham County sheriff's deputies shot him in Arvonia, Virginia, on February 13, 2016. Virginia State Police said Perkins had been behaving erratically and assaulted people at a convenience store, then entered a nearby residence and attacked an elderly couple. When two deputies arrived, authorities reported that he jumped through a plate-glass window, knocked one deputy to the ground and continued struggling with him. A deputy fired, killing Perkins at the scene; the injured deputy was treated at a hospital. State Police opened the shooting investigation. Those alleged assaults form part of the police account, but do not establish a final independent prosecutor's finding about whether gunfire was necessary against an unarmed person.
