What happened

Peter Fanfan, 29, was shot and killed by Boston police in Dorchester on February 12, 2016. Officers responding to a reported shooting at 107 Devon Street encountered Fanfan near Laredo Street while he was helping another injured man toward a vehicle. Police said Fanfan fired at Detective James Coyne and other responding officers, who ordered him to drop his handgun before returning fire. Suffolk County prosecutors released police-dispatch audio and video during the investigation; officials said a discharged gun was recovered beside Fanfan and a projectile was found in the tire of an unmarked police car. The authorities' reconstruction and the physical evidence should be distinguished from an independent criminal verdict. Prosecutors pledged to share their investigative materials with Fanfan’s family after review.
