What happened

Mohamed Barry, 30, was killed by Columbus police after attacking diners at the Nazareth Restaurant in northeast Columbus, Ohio, on February 11, 2016. Police and restaurant witnesses said a man carrying a machete wounded four patrons before fleeing in a car. Officers intercepted Barry nearby and attempted to use a Taser; authorities said he then lunged at them with a machete and a knife and was shot. The weapons were reportedly recovered. Federal agents investigated whether the restaurant attack had an extremist motive, but early inclusion of Barry in a federal database did not establish the motive as a proven fact. The armed restaurant attack, injured patrons, attempted less-lethal force and final police confrontation are all necessary context for a fatal-shooting record.
