What happened

Jerand Edward Ross, 24, was shot during a February 11, 2016, no-knock narcotics raid at the Villages on the River apartments in Riverdale, Georgia. Officers said Ross fled the apartment through the back door and fatally shot Riverdale police Major Greg “Lem” Barney, who had been helping a Clayton County drug unit execute the warrant. A Clayton County officer returned fire, striking Ross four times, including in the head. Ross survived in critical condition for two months before dying in hospice on April 11. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation examined the exchange. Both Barney’s death and Ross’s later death matter in documenting what happened; the February incident date is distinct from Ross’s April death date. The police account of the confrontation is attributed to investigators.
