What happened
Keith Childress Jr., 23, was shot and killed by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and U.S. Marshals task-force officers on December 31, 2015. The officers were trying to arrest Childress on a warrant that originated from a mistaken understanding of the charges against him. He was carrying a cellphone; officers believed he might have a gun and fired as he moved through a residential area. The shooting was reviewed in subsequent civil-rights litigation, where relatives challenged the identification, tactics and use of lethal force. The warrant confusion and the absence of a firearm were central to public criticism of the operation. The existing court record documents disputed testimony, not an automatic finding that all plaintiffs' allegations were proven.
