What happened

Quintonio LeGrier, 19, a Northern Illinois University student who was experiencing a behavioral crisis, was shot and killed by Chicago Officer Robert Rialmo on December 26, 2015. LeGrier had been involved in a dispute with his father, who called for police assistance, and the officer said LeGrier advanced toward him carrying a baseball bat. Rialmo fired toward LeGrier in the entryway, also killing uninvolved neighbor Bettie Jones. LeGrier's family argued Rialmo used excessive force, and the police accountability agency reviewed the incident. A civil jury ultimately found in the officer's favor on liability, while a separate finding concerned the family's claims and damages. The disputed distances, alleged bat threat, and Jones's bystander death require careful separation from each family's litigation.
